Snack Time: A Special Moment for Picky Eaters
Snack time has always been a special part of our day, but living in the USA has definitely redefined what a snack means to me. Growing up in Germany, I thought of a snack as something small, like a handful of nuts or a piece of fruit – just a light bite between meals to tide us over. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a snack is “a small amount of food that is eaten between meals,” and Merriam-Webster defines it as “a light meal, food eaton between regular meals.” Simple, right?
A Different Snack Culture
But as I soon realized, it wasn’t that simple at all. Here, a snack often means a bag of chips, a handful of cheesy crackers coated in artificial cheese powder that stains your fingers for days, or a bowl of Froot Loops. It was just different. And while I totally accept these cultural differences, I knew I didn’t want to establish those habits for my kids.
It just didn’t feel right to rely on these ultra-processed snacks every day. In my opinion, they’re not the best choice in the long run. Don’t get me wrong—I enjoy these snacks from time to time, and they definitely have their place. But in our home, they remain an occasional treat, not an everyday necessity. As my kids grew older and their school days became longer, I knew I had to find better snack options to keep them satisfied and energized.
How Snack Time Changed as My Kids Grew
When my kids were younger, snack time was much easier. With smaller portions, they were quickly satisfied, and snacks didn’t feel like a big deal. Plus, the products available for younger kids seemed to be more regulated-less sugar, fewer artificial flavors and dyes.
But now, with an 8-year-old and a 12-year-old, snack time has become a completely different story. Their school days start early and end late, and the snacks they take to school have grown in size-just like their appetites when they come home. Suddenly, a small fruit pouch or a handful of crackers just isn’t enough.
This shift made me realize that I needed to rethink snack time and dive deeper into the world of homemade snacks-something that would keep them fuller for longer without relying on ultra-processed options.
But why Are Unhealthy Snacks So Common?
As I look at the food industry, I’m often left wondering why so many things are allowed in our food that shouldn’t be there in the first place. Take the snack aisle, for example, where the trend seems to be: the more artificial, the brighter, the sweeter – the better. But when it comes to the health of our children, I believe this can’t be the solution.
The Problem with store-bought Snacks, store-bought snacks can be convenient, but when you’re aiming for high-quality, healthy options, they often come with a hefty price tag. Plus, I’ve noticed that these snacks don’t keep my kids full for long – at least, not long enough to make it to the next meal. The solution was clear: I needed to get creative and start making snacks at home that would keep them full, healthy, and satisfied. And as long as genuinely healthy snacks are so overpriced that you have to think twice before buying them, or ration them carefully, homemade snacks are a fantastic alternative.
Making Snacks More Portable and Fun
One thing became clear pretty quickly – there was so many food that could be made smaller and more portable. Take pizza, for example. Why not make pizza muffins? Or transform a regular cake into brownies or donuts for easy, on-the-go snacks? I once read, “If you want to know what’s in your food, make it yourself.” And that’s truly how simple it is. By making snacks at home, I could avoid the unnecessary artificial colors and added sugars that are often found in store-bought products. We still enjoy sweetness in our home – whether it’s honey or a small amount of sugar – but in moderation, and that makes a huge difference.
The Power of Fresh Ingredients
What I love most is that I’ve been able to enrich some of my recipes with freshly ground flour or whole grains, which helps keep my kids fuller for longer. As parents, you know how frustrating it can be to prepare dinner when your kids are already starving. They can’t wait until the next meal, and that’s when a healthy, hearty snack comes in handy to keep them going.
Get Creative with Homemade Snacks
The beauty of homemade snacks is that your creativity knows no bounds. From sweet to savory, there’s something for everyone, and it can all start with a solid base, like a homemade sandwich bread that can be used for countless lunchbox ideas and snacks. No more relying on pre-packaged, overly sugary treats!
